Just Out of Jupiter’s Reach
Tornado, Jamal, Anthony, Kisha, Gracious, Dawud, and Ravi were selected out of earth’s human population for a science experiment. Each one has had their DNA altered to be compatible with their individual Miri (living ship), and on which they launch into outer space. They leave behind everything they’ve known and love, for ten years, and without any contact with each other or anyone back on earth. If they complete the experiment, they will be awarded twenty million euros each. After five years, the seven Miri and their occupants, rendezvous “Just Out of Jupiter’s Reach” (which is also the title of the short story), with the agreement that this meeting will not be monitored by the research organisation. They have seven days only. What unfolds next is an exploration of what it means to belong, to witness, and to be.
Nnedi Okorafor, who is the author, delivers an intimate and easy to follow narrative, holding your attention for a read in one sitting. Working through the Tornado’s viewpoint (main character), we get to know the other six people and how they all relate with their respective Miri. I did not want this story to end, but I came away both satisfied and hungry for more reads like this.
So, would I recommend it? Absolutely!
